Every January, many people start off by setting a familiar promise to themselves. ¨ I’m going to go to the gym every day this year¨ or ¨ I’m going to eat cleaner¨. People fill their calendars with goals and aspirations of what they want for themselves for the year, but by February, most people’s resolutions have died. People set resolutions to try to create a better version of themselves for the New Year, but then why do most resolutions fall through?
The Most Popular Set Resolutions
For the past few years, the most common set of resolutions has been about health, according to Anna Fleck from Statista.com. Things like weight loss, eating healthy, and exercising are some things that some people strive to improve themselves. Others set goals to improve their finances, like saving more money and stopping spending so much money on Starbucks. Another resolution people set to better themselves is to improve their mental health. Things like going to regular therapy sessions and taking up stress-relieving activities like walking and doing yoga. The last most popular New Year’s Resolution is about personal growth. After having a rough year, it can be good to set goals for yourself to become a happier person. Some examples are smoking and drinking less, getting more sleep, spending more time outdoors, and spending more time with family and friends.
Successful Resolutions
Successful New Year’s Resolutions share a few of the same qualities, these being specific, realistic, and focused on the person’s habits rather than being a quick fix. Instead of goals like “get healthier” or “eat better,” effective resolutions define what success looks like. For example, setting the goal to work out 3 times a week rather than setting the goal “lose weight” or adding more veggies to your meals. This also allows the room to be flexible. Resolutions that connect to you personally. Things like improving your mental health and building stronger relationships are more motivating and easier to maintain. By starting little, tracking progress, and viewing setbacks as a part of the process, people are far more likely to stick to their set resolutions and make them last in their everyday lives.
Resolutions That Rarely Last
Although millions of people set resolutions for themselves every year, not all of them are successful. Some people set very unrealistic goals for themselves each year of things they want to accomplish, but know it’s almost impossible. For example, saying that they want to travel to all 50 states or they want to go to the gym every day when they have a full-time job. Most of the time, people’s New Year’s resolutions don’t work because they give up after the first day. Saying they want to eat healthier, but then have a New Year’s party the next day with all kinds of desserts. People setting unrealistic goals and not putting in enough time or effort are the main reasons that their resolutions will fail.
How To Make Your Resolution Stick Throughout the Year
When one comes up with something they want to change for the New Year, the only way it is going to work is if they put in the time and effort. As much as one may want to stop bad habits like drinking or smoking, the only way it will work is if they put in all the effort and make sure they stop thinking about that drink after dinner. If you put in the effort and do everything you need to get your resolution to work out for you, then it will happen!
