Roxbury High School had its homecoming the week of 10/6-10/10. Let’s see a recap of all that has happened. This was Roxbury’s first-ever Carnival Spirit week; as the school used to hold a school dance instead.
Spirit Week
The themes for Spirit Week leading up to Homecoming that were chosen by student council members were PJ day on Monday, Twin day Tuesday, Jersey day Wednesday, Adam Sandler day Thursday, and pink out/ Neon on Friday.
The Gael Cup
The Gael Cup is the official name of Roxbury High School’s pep rallies, which are held a few times a year.
The pep rally had six events. Here’s who won each:
- The Duck Hunt – Freshmen
- Egg Toss – Sophomores
- Capture the Flag – Seniors
- Tug of War – Juniors
- The Relay – Seniors
- Head/ Shoulder /Knees/ Toes/ Pompom – Seniors
After this even, the Gael Cup points are as follows:
- Freshmen: 2405
- Sophomores: 1470
- Juniors: 1275
- Seniors: 2030
So far, the freshmen are in the lead for the Gael Cup!
When asked about their opinion about the event, a sophomore student at Roxbury High School said: “The pep Rally was fun. I just wish it wasn’t so rushed at the end as everybody tried to leave.”
The Homecoming Carnival
This year, and potentially going forward, the student council has decided to host a Homecoming Carnival in place of a Homecoming Dance, which was previously a school tradition.
The games and activities included at the carnival were:
- Ring Toss
- Balloon Darts
- Temporary Tattoos
- Glitter/Glow in the dark stickers
- “Where’s the Ball?”
- Oversized Pong Toss
- Flying drones through an obstacle course
- Psychic Fortune Telling/Prize Wheel
- Human Slot Machine Operation
- Can Knocker (with bean bags)
- Facepainting
- Kan Jam
“I really liked the henna station and the popcorn. It made it feel like a carnival!” a senior said during our interview. The most popular event was the Can knocker, according to Ms. Kaine, student council advisor.
For next year’s Homecoming, the student council hopes to feature more games and possibly live entertainment. Through some interviews with students, we have heard both the good and the bad. The good side of the interviews is that the homecoming carnival was welcoming and fun, and it felt like the community came together. Many people dressed up in the theme of pink out/neon. The not-so-good part of the interviews was that the carnival took away the point of homecoming and opened it up to the community. However, others liked this new addition. “It’s nice to see the community come together and show up for the event, but it also took away the fun of having a homecoming dance,” a freshman said.
The Homecoming Game
The Homecoming Game began at 7:00 directly after the carnival, which was very lively. Everyone was dressed in pink or neon as per the theme. “The Game was very enjoyable to watch,” said one sophomore. A lot of people came out to support the Gaels in their homecoming game. The end score was 24-6 with Roxbury winning. The Color Guard had an amazing performance, and the band performed nicely. “ Watching the cheerleaders and Color Guard was a nice break from the game,” said one Junior.
Recap of Roxbury’s Week of 10/6-10/10
Overall, the carnival, rather than the homecoming dance, was a success, and many people enjoyed it. Roxbury won their homecoming game against Randolph. In addition to the pep rally and Gael Cup, the freshmen are in the lead.
