The Former 45th President and now soon-to-be 47th President has officially won the United States Presidential Election. Over the night of November 5, 2024, Donald Trump and Republicans made massive gains. Trump won the election with 312 compared to Kamala’s 226 electoral votes. The Senate majority went to Republicans very early on Election night, with it now standing at 53 seats for the GOP and 46 seats for the Democrats, with one remaining seat in Arizona, expected to bring the Democrats to a total of 47 seats. Republicans have also made massive gains in the house, with a 218 majority, Republicans lead Democrats 213 to 203.
Presidential Election
First and foremost, the swing states included Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada, all of which have gone for Trump. Notably, Georgia and North Carolina were called very early for Trump, with Pennsylvania soon followed, putting Trump at 267 electoral votes before Alaska’s 3 electoral votes were submitted. However, it was surprisingly not Pennsylvania that put Trump over 270, but Wisconsin, as it set him to 277 electoral votes.
Furthermore, many states shocked the public eye with the sheer competition in these traditionally blue states; New Mexico was merely 50,000 votes away from flipping, New Hampshire 23,000 votes, Maine 50,000, and both New Jersey and New York were won by Harris by percentages less than half that of Biden’s in 2020. (AP News).
New Jersey remarkably came within 5 points of flipping into the GOP column. California’s margin for Kamala Harris went from a whopping 29 points for Biden in 2020 to 17 points in 2024. Minnesota, the home of Harris’ choice of Vice President, Tim Walz, merely went to Kamala by 5 percentage points. Virginia went to Harris by 5 points. (AP News).
Moreover, many former swing states saw extremely massive swings into the Republican column. Iowa and Ohio are solidly in the pocket of the GOP. Most remarkably Texas and Florida have shifted deep into the GOP column. Texas, which in 2020 was believed to be a state that could potentially flip for Biden and Florida, was all but guaranteed to go for Biden according to the polls. Texas and Florida have shifted double and quadruple the points to the right, going from 5.6 points for Trump to 13.9 points for Trump and 3.3 to a whopping 13.1, respectively.
The results of the demographics are not yet completely available, this section of the article will be updated once the information is released.
Trump won the election with all 7 swing states, nearly flipping many formerly solid Democrat States in the process. Trump won 312 electoral votes to Kamala Harris’s 226.
Senate
The GOP has officially gained the Senate Majority. As of this writing, the GOP has 53 seats to the Democrats’ 47 seats (AP News).
Unlike Donald Trump, New Jersey Republican Curtis Basha, did not perform as strongly; Andy Kim won New Jersey by 8.5 points.
House of Representatives
As of the writing of this article, the House Race is Democrats at 205 and Republicans at 214, with 218 as the majority. The GOP has the advantage, and it appears likely that Republicans will take the House as well.
In New Jersey, Democrats have won nine seats, and Republicans have won three. Roxbury Township, which is in District 7, incumbent Thomas Kean Jr. defeated Sue Altman by 6.8 points.
Conclusion and Other Notes
Kamala Harris did not concede the election until the following day, November 6th. Donald Trump won the popular vote for the first time, with Trump’s 75.1 million votes and Harris’s 71.8 million votes, notably lower than the 2020 election turnout.
With Donald Trump elected as the 47th President of the United States, winning the popular vote for the first time by around 4 million votes, the Electoral College with 312 electoral votes to Harris’ 226, and shockingly strong performances in traditionally blue states, this heated and controversial election season has been one of a kind journey.
