Roxbury High School’s newest addition to the faculty, Mrs. Kathleen Rummell, brings more than a decade of experience, an unmistakably energetic teaching style, and a genuine passion for helping students grow. With ten years of teaching behind her, plus a career in private industry and time at NYU, Rumell steps into RHS with both expertise and enthusiasm.
Her path to the classroom was sparked by an observation close to home: many of her children’s friends struggled with basic domestic knowledge and skills, such as sewing and cooking. “I saw that gap and wanted to make a difference,” she said. That drive to bridge understanding still defines her work today.
Choosing Roxbury was, in her words, “easy.” The community’s warmth immediately stood out. “Everyone is super, super friendly and polite—its not something you see everywhere,” Rummell noted, adding that the first few days on campus only confirmed her choice.
Rummell describes her teaching style as “energetic, real, and honest.” She listens and adapts to her students, meeting them where they are while pushing them to new heights. Her favorite part of teaching? “Imparting knowledge and helping someone grow.”
Beyond the classroom, Rummell already envisions contributing in new ways. She hopes to launch a babysitting certification program in partnership with EMT’s and firefighters, equipping students with emergency recovery skills, official certification, and the training needed behind their back. “It’s about giving them tools they can use in the real world,” she explained.
When she isn’t teaching, Rummell stays active—skiing, dancing, horseback riding, swimming, and cooking all make her top list of hobbies. Her students may be surprised to learn just how adventurous she is, but her interests mirror the same curiosity she fosters in class.
A lover of history and mythology, Rummell was once fascinated by Greek gods and goddesses during her own high school years. That sense of wonder shapes her classroom outlook today. She lives by the Golden Rule, takes her coffee black, and believes students should “always have faith in yourself and hold true to your values.”
Whether she’s sharing her top five favorite foods (Italian, steak, salads, tiramisu, and fruit tart) or her top piece of advice, Rummell makes one thing clear: she’s here to leave a mark on Roxbury. And judging by the excitement surrounding her arrival, she already has.
