With the school year halfway done, the talk of next year’s schedules is already happening. There are many classes, but one class sticks out more than the rest.
That class is Sports Media. In this class, you create different posts celebrating Roxbury athletes’ wins, milestones, stats, and much more. Senior Joey Ronchetta said, “This class is my favorite class I have ever taken in high school. I like how you have the freedom to do your own thing and how it is run like a business instead of a class. You have no assignments, the work you put in is the grade you will get. I also really like how there are no other classes like this one, it is one of a kind,” when asked about the class.
As Joey Ronchetta stated, the class does not follow a curriculum, and you can take it in both your junior and senior years. Junior Peyton Seader said, “I plan on retaking this class next year, because it is something that I am passionate about and enjoy doing,” when asked about retaking it next year.
Each person could get a different role, like creating a game day for a certain sport, posting win posts, highlighting different athletes for their achievements, and making different sports-related videos. There is one more job that you can choose from, and that is the Student Admin. The Student Admin gets to run the Roxbury Athletics Instagrams and post all the different posts people make in the class.
Senior Katie Caron stated, “I’ve incorporated a bunch of my ideas into work for the class! One of my favorite examples was combining a 2000s magazine aesthetic and Roxbury sports to put together ‘Replay’ which was set up to recap the fall season in the format of a magazine. It was super fun to create,” when asked how she put her ideas in her work.
She has also stated, “Coming from a Journalism background, I was able to bring my skills to the Sports Media class. I have used Journalism in various ways in the class including writing sports recaps, conducting interviews, coming up with titles and captions for posts, and of course, using photos to help tell a story,” when asked a follow-up question about how she incorporated Journalism into her Sports Media projects.
Mr. Bischoff teaches the class and says, “We started the class to provide students who are interested in sports an opportunity to explore skills that they can use in college and beyond. Everyone’s playing career ends at some point, so why not stay involved with sports when that happens? The class has been a lot of fun to teach and be a part of. Mostly because I can see the benefits it has had on our athletic community, and the students are the ones responsible for that. My goal is to give them the power to create anything that they can come up with to ‘support and promote our athletes and our programs’. Giving students the power to be creative and to dream “Wouldn’t it be cool if we…” allows them to positively impact our program and the larger Roxbury Athletics community,” when asked why people should take the class.
Peyton Seader had said, “I like the class, I think it’s something unique that the school doesn’t offer often.”
Katie Caron has also stated, “I enjoy the class! It is super fun and gives you a ton of opportunities to apply skills and be creative. Mr. Bischoff is also a great teacher and is always willing to help improve student work in any way he can.”
If you want to take Sports Media next year, talk to your guidance counselor during scheduling. It’s a great class!
