Tommy Cutlets is back in the driver’s seat!
Tommy DeVito is once again set to start as ‘QB1’ in New York this weekend, as “Tommy Cutlets” mania is set to take over East Rutherford once again The Giants have set the rookie from the University of Missouri as ‘QB2’ and made Daniel Jones the official third string.
After starting a few games a season ago, DeVito has served as the team’s third-string quarterback for the entire 2024 season up to this point. Now, DeVito is gearing up for his time to shine in the starting role for a second consecutive season and flip the script.
A year ago DeVito, who made the team as an undrafted rookie, started his second NFL game when the Giants visited the Washington Commanders. DeVito threw three touchdown passes in a 31-19 Giants victory.
DeVito started and won the next two games and was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week after a Monday night victory against Green Bay. He was the first Giants rookie quarterback to win three consecutive games since franchise icon Phil Simms in 1979. DeVito energized the locker room and, got the fan base going, and as a local product playing for his hometown team, he was one of the best stories of the 2023 NFL season.
When DeVito was asked about his feelings when he was told he is now starting, “I wouldn’t say I was surprised, I was open for all outcomes. It’s kind of something that I’ve been preparing for since last year. You always say ‘Stay ready, even though you’re quarterback three. Stay ready, you never know’. And it’s kind of similar to last year, you never know. But continuing to work throughout this whole season so far, learn, practice, just make the most of it, so that way when the opportunity comes, you’ll be ready for it.”
In nine total appearances last year, DeVito threw for 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions, completing 64 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 195 yards, a touchdown, and one lost fumble.
The Giants will almost assuredly draft a young quarterback at this year’s NFL draft. If DeVito has a strong showing down the stretch, the Giants may be in a pickle holding a strong argument that DeVito could be the starter in 2025 as well.
Daniel Jones is now stuck as ‘QB3,’ and questions are starting to flare as nobody really knows the next move. On Thursday, following a session in which he took practice squad reps at safety, an emotional Jones said thank you and goodbye to the organization that drafted him.
Holding back tears, Jones addressed his respect for his teammates and the entire Giants organization for the opportunities he was given. Many acknowledged throughout his press conference that he is considering requesting a release or leaving the team.
Finally, as the press conference was coming to an end, Jones gave his respect and weight to Tommy DeVito–who will replace him on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
