A statistic drawn by the Pew Research Center shows that nearly sixty-five percent of Americans feel depleted when thinking about politics, while fifty-five percent feel enraged. This upcoming election has caused great uproar among the American people. Candidates are trying everything in their power to make voters feel acknowledged. There are numerous concerns in this election, causing significant stress for people–including inflation, border concerns, education, taxes, and the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The people want answers instead of endless stress and constant confusion.
A few years back a poll was conducted by the Pew Research Center to detect whether Americans agree with the two-party system. Conclusively, it was determined that 4 out of 10 Americans desire more political party options. Despite the availability of the Independent party, many voters don’t find it fairly represented. Looking at the bigger picture it’s evident that since the mid-1800s elections have repeatedly come down to a choice between Democrat or Republican.
With over 330 million people, getting the nation to agree to a compromise is complicated. Especially concerning personal matters such as the overturn of Roe v. Wade and taxes, most Americans agree on the importance of feeling represented and having a fair political system for all. Abortion and taxes have often been controversial topics for the American people.
Due to significant disagreement on these issues, Americans have increasingly divided themselves based on their political views. Uniting all Americans has been a prominent challenge within the nation. Many agree that media coverage has worsened this problem by occupying people’s feeds with viewpoints they already know. Furthermore, people are not introduced to new ideologies. An article written by AP News states, “Nearly three-quarters of U.S. adults say the news media is increasing political polarization in this country,” making it difficult for voters to communicate, pushing them further apart.
How can we prevent this from happening in the future? Americans should start to acknowledge and familiarize themselves with more diverse viewpoints and keep an open mind to all perspectives. There are many issues within and outside of America. Prioritizing these issues by coming together as a nation will increase unity and contribute to making the world stronger and safer for everyone.
