Following the presidential debate last Tuesday night just moments after former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris stepped off the stage Miss Americana posted on her Instagram endorsing Vice President Harris for President in the 2024 election.
Taylor Swift is the most well-known pop culture icon. One of the most celebrated artists in the music industry with currently reaching the status of the most awarded artist at the VMA awards. She has enormous influence across the globe, especially among young females.
The endorsement followed the heated debate Tuesday night. Topics such as immigration, abortion, and healthcare were debated. Swift took to her Instagram page with a lengthy caption and photo of herself and her cat, Benjamin Button, to show her support for Harris. Swift ended the caption with “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.”
This endorsement came at a crucial time in the Harris campaign. Harris has been attempting to attract the younger generations to vote. Her campaign launched over the summer focusing on trends such as “Brat Summer” and “Hotties for Harris.”
Swift has huge political influence, therefore, this endorsement is a huge deal. Following her endorsement, Swift drove more than 400,000 voters to the U.S. voter information website. This time last year, Swift posted on her Instagram, encouraging her followers to register to vote. More than 35,000 new voter registrations were recorded on Vote.org.
Swift has not been notably political before, she stays mostly quiet about her views. However, she first discussed politics in her 2020 Netflix documentary
“Miss Americana,” and has since been more vocal about politics since.
Swift has made it clear to her audience that she is a feminist. She has spoken about her experience as a woman in the music industry and the struggles she has faced because of it. Swift released her well-known song “The Man” on her album Lover in 2019. The song describes her constant struggle to be put down in the industry and the hardships all women face.
Swift also champions LGBTQIA+ rights. Her hit song “You Need To Calm Down,” also a track on her Lover album shows her support for the community. The lyrics “And control your urges to scream about all the people you hate, ‘Cause shade never made anybody less gay” is a direct jab at politicians and their supporters who don’t support the rights of LGBTQIA+ people.
Harris and her running mate Tim Waltz are very clear they are grateful for Swift’s support. Following her announcement the Harris campaign started selling friendship bracelets on their website, a clear tie to Swift.
Swift’s support will be crucial in this election but whether or not it will ensure a Harris victory in the polls is still up for debate. The election will take place on November 5, 2024.
