Each week, the Roxbury Recap features one teacher or student who is making an impact at RHS. To learn more about this, check out Mia Bacalhau & Lily Polster’s article here.
Our 9/9 Student of the Week is Mateo Barraza Agama! Mateo is currently a senior at RHS, and he has made a big impact on his peers during his time here.
When asked about himself, Mateo had this to say: “My name is Juan Mateo Barraza Agama, I was born in Peru and moved here to America in 2019. In the beginning, it was a little difficult for me to speak English. But, with the help of my teacher and friends, I can do it.” This is Mateo’s senior year and he shares his time here in Roxbury, and in Vo-tech where he studies culinary. “Next year is very important to me because I’m graduating from Vo-tech and Roxbury.” Mateo is interested in the IWF (Independent Wrestling Federation), cooking, reading fiction books, and helping others. His favorite hobbies are bocce ball, exercising, reading, and participating in the unified flag football. A fun fact about Mateo is that he is a cat person, he won the Spanish contest in EMS with the Peruvian dish Lomo Saltado, and for the past two years, he has been doing an internship job. Agamas kindness and bright smile is appreciated by all around him which is evidenced by the following quote:
“I have had the pleasure of teaching Mateo for the last 3 years. He has grown so much since I’ve met him. Mateo is the first person to offer to help out a friend or a teacher in need. He is kind and empathetic. Every morning he asks how I am doing. He has been a great role model for the younger students in our class. Mateo is hard-working and determined to be successful. He attends Vo-tech for their culinary program and loves to teach us all the kitchen skills he learns. I am excited to see what he can accomplish during his senior year!” – Ms. Gangemi
Congratulations to Mateo Barraza Agama, our 9/9 Student of the Week!
