This year has been one to remember for Roxbury Athletics. From football to lacrosse, track and field to swim, the 23-24 season will not be forgotten. The Gaels put up a fight all season for each and every sport. Overall, Roxbury Athletics totalled up an impressive 177 athletic game/meet wins this year (As of May 15th). In Roxbury, our coaches turn regular high school students into talented student-athletes. This year had its ups and downs, but the Gaels found a way to make this year one to remember. Statistically speaking, this year football and softball had the highest win percentage! Following close behind them was our very own bowling team. It has been a great year for Roxbury Athletics, and get ready for the 2024-2025 season, where Roxbury comes back better and stronger.
FOOTBALL: The 2023-2024 football season was one that will go down in history for years to come. The Varsity boys played hard all season to earn themselves a history changing record of 11-1 wins. This years team was led by 15 committed, hard-working, and dedicated seniors: – Anthony Skawinski, Colin Richter, Jared Irwin, Justin DeRosa, Jahmani Miller, Eli Kali, Ryan Donnelly, Dean Campiglia, Matt Rattay, Christian Mobilio, Josh Rivera, Gunnar Hilsinger, Jadon DeRosa, Matt Collins, and Connor Patton. Statistically, the Gaels had 333 carries, 23 rushing touchdowns, 15 passing touchdowns, 15 receiving touchdowns, and 806 tackles. The student section played a huge role in the team’s success, showing out every Friday night, from pink out to USA. Friday Night Football was one of the highlights of this school year, with themes that brought the crowd to their feet, and plays that brought other teams to their defeat. With a historical 11-1 record, this season will be one to remember.
BASEBALL: Following the football team, Roxbury Baseball is bringing the heat this season. As of May 15th, the team has won 12 games so far, and have 3 more to come. Seniors Matt Capko, Matt Rattay, and Colin Richter have been driving forces in the teams’ success. Statistically, the team has been led by Colin Richter (2), Matt Capko (1), and Fabio Marcano (1), each earning their team a home run(s). Joey Ronchetta, Matt Capko, Michael Paxos, and Ryan Johannessen, have all surpassed 10 singles this season. Roxbury Baseball’s Pitchers have been on their A-game this year, with a combined 122 strikeouts. Kyle Phillips, Colin Donnelly, Michael Paxos, and Luke Hunter have a combined total of 1,798 pitches. The baseball team plans to continue to give it their all for the remainder of their season,
BOYS BASKETBALL: Boys Basketball fought long and hard this year, starting and finishing their season each with a win. Boys basketball has forever been a student-favorite sport, and the team truly gave it their all this season. Spending their last year with the team, Seniors Joe Benanti, Chris Ditrolio, Connor Patton, Matt Collins, Lucas Amenta, Jared Irwin, Jake Morgan, Joey Palanchi, and Mikey Temple helped their team to a record of 13-11. Leading the teams statistically were Matt Collins, Chris Ditrolio, and Jake Morgan, all surpassing 175 points this season. We wish all the seniors the best of luck with their plans after highschool.
TRACK AND FIELD: Track and field has been extremely competitive in Morris County for as long as many know, and every year Roxbury Track and Field continues to deliver. This year specifically, Roxbury track and field had 22 seniors. 17 participated in indoor, all 22 participated in outdoor, 8 participated in cross country, and 7 of these seniors participated in all 3 this year.
The seniors this season are as follow: Rebecca Borda, Dean Campiglia, Ryan Donnelly, Andrew Elmasri, Christopher (Dorel) Esposito, Madison Garguilo, Julia Gonzalez, Ella Izzi, Renee Kilkeary, William Knapp, Zachary Kosinski, Nicholas Maltese, Norbert Martinez, Daniel McCarthy, Caleb McInnes, Edward Miller, Brandon Morales, Reilly Brady Rawla, Claire Silfies, Diego Vargas, and Jared Weiss. Claire Silfies, Ella Izzi, Madison Gargiulo, and Reilly Opper, currently hold season records in the 100H, 100m, 1600m, 200m, 3200m, 400H, 800m,D, HJ, J, LJ, S, TJ and many others. Brandon Morales, Christopher (Dorel) Esposito, Jared Weiss, Daniel McCarthy, Caleb McInnes, Dean Campiglia, William Knapp, Zachary Kosinski, and Ryan Donnelly also hold records for 100m, 110H, 1600m, 200m, 3200m, 400H, 400m, 800m, D, J, LJ, PV, S, TJ, and more. Roxbury is so proud of all the track and field, and cross country achievements this season. Roxbury has and will continue to impress, and we wish luck to the seniors with their plans after high school.
BOYS SOCCER: Roxbury Soccer earned themselves 74 points this season, with 26 goals and 22 assists. A big thank you goes out to the 14 Seniors who led the team: Connor Stark, Lucas Sosa, Evan Mohren, Chris Aguilar, Dylan Reynolds, Lucas Amenta, Michael D’Arco, Luke LeSueur, Darryl Bautista, Ben Weiss, Erick Santos, Matthew Marcano, Aizik Guevara, and Noah Matthews. Goalie Connor Stark had an impressive 50 saves, and Lucas Amenta earned 14 points this season! The team fought hard for a record of 7-10, and plan to come back next year even stronger.
GIRLS SOCCER: Roxbury Girls Soccer was a force to be reckoned with this year. With a record of 10-4-2, the girls really brought their all this season. With 99 points this year, the team brought home the win almost every time. Leading the team is Juliana Osterman, a senior who scored 16 goals this year, and 2 assists, earning herself 34 points! A key individual in the team’s success was goalie Aislyn Rivera, who had 145 saves this season! Additionally, Bella Pomroy, Sophia Garcia, Reilly Opper Leah Schlam, Kylie Haughey, Kendra Haughey, Julia Kest, Julia Hornbeck, Ava Dipasquale, Sadie Annis, Sophie Navarro, and Clara Donnely brought the heat for their final season with the Roxbury Gaels. Good luck to all of the talented girls this season for their post-graduation plans!
VOLLEYBALL: Roxbury Volleyball had a great season this year! With a record of 15-9, the girls really showed up! The team this year was led by Head Coach Alison Correnti, and Seniors’ Tayla O’Conner, Ella Izzi, Krystal Cole, Danielle McGowan, Giuliana Fernandez, and Jinelle Hiraman. This season, the team totaled 494 kills, 203 blocks, 639 digs, 431 assists, and 167 aces! Impressive achievements were seen this year, and Tayla O’Conner set the bar high in October when she celebrated attaining 600 digs, 400 kills, and 100 aces all time! The team worked hard this year, and it paid off, as they became ranked #10 in the NJAC Standings! Roxbury Volleyball gave it their all throughout the season and we wish them the best of luck for the next upcoming seasons, and after graduation!
SOFTBALL: Our Roxbury Softball team is currently in the middle of a very successful season The team has been proving themselves as leaders in the league with a 13-2 record as of May 15th. Softball is being led by 4 seniors, these being: Angelina Moschella, Hailey Errichiello, Lexi Lynch, and Skylar Dugan. They are currently ranked 3rd out of 6 in NJAC – American, with still more games to come. This year Roxbury Softball is led in runs by Angelina Moschella, followed by Savannah Cirella, Ryan Mullen, and Olivia Fadden. With hits, Angelina Moschella and Savannah Cirella continue to crush it, along with Lily Spezza and Ryan Mullen. Senior Hailey Errichiello this year got her 100th hit, along with being a force as one of Roxbury’s strongest pitchers. Make sure to keep your eye on Sidney Ribnicky, who earned her 100th career strikeout as a sophomore! Stay excited, because there is so much more to come for Roxbury Softball.
BOYS LACROSSE: It has been a great season so far for our Boys Lacrosse team. They are currently 3rd of 4 in NJILL – Rizk, and hold a record of 10-7. Anthony Skawinski currently leads the team in goals (74), followed by Trevor Klapmuts (42). Anthony Skawinski continues to lead, in Total Points, again followed by Trevor Klapmuts, Soham Bhagavatula, and Dunavan Krause.
This very strong group of individuals has dominated the lacrosse scene this season. The team have earned themselves 10 wins as of May 15th, with 169 goals, 280 points, 456 ground balls, and 194 goalie saves. The seniors of Roxbury Boys Lax are as follows: Christian Mobilio, Colby Lanager, Jadon DeRosa, Josh Rivera, Joey Palanchi, Anthony Skawinski, and Nico Del Rosario. The team still has 3 more games, so make sure to show out and support Boys Lax!
GIRLS LACROSSE: Girls Lacrosse has been doing great this season, with a current record of 10-5, and they are ranked 3rd of 8 in NJIGLL – Independence Blue. The team is led by 3 dedicated and hardworking seniors: Riley Shivas, Suraiya Perrett, and Kayla Hernandez. These three girls have truly given it their all this season, helping lead the team as they play their final games on Roxbury Turf. Together, the team has 299 points, 212 goals, 226 ground balls, and 171 saves. Goalie Isabel Mango has shown up this season, always keeping away from our opponents. Abbie Rattay, Alexis Oliveira, and Isabella Potillo currently lead the team in goals, as well as points. Roxbury Girls Lacrosse is coached by Mr. Kevin Bewalder, and the team will continue to dominate as a force for the rest of their season.
HOCKEY: Turning to the Gaels Hockey team, the team earned themselves wins against powerhouses such as Vernon, High Point, Montville, and many others. The hockey team had the honor of being led by 7 seniors who played their final seasons, these being: Gavin Barooah, C.J. Loizou, Sean Hardy, Connor Stark, Christian Sokolowski, A.J. Mancuso, and Nick Pieper. The team was led by Head Coach Mr. Benbow, as well as #21, Captain Gavin Barooah, and #18, Assistant Captain Ryan VanZile. Leading the team in goals was Ryan VanZile, closely followed by Sean Hardy, Gavin Barooah, Micheal Nelson, and A.J. Mancuso. This year the Gaels earned themselves 85 goals, 90 assists, 175 points, and the teams’ goalies had an average of an impressive 0.819% save percentage. Roxbury Hockey is ready for next season, and they plan on coming back stronger and better!
GIRLS BASKETBALL: Kaitlyn Murphy and Daniella McMillin were the driving force behind Girls Basketball this year! Taking home 8 wins this year, the girls fought hard for each and every game. This season had their highs and lows, but the team made sure to bring the heat every night! From Hackettstown to Hopatcong and Mount Olive, the girls brought it all together to win many tough matchups! Leading the team in stats were Kaitlyn Murphy, Gianna Capriglione, Abbie Rattay, and Izzy Dacosta. As a team, they earned themselves 911 points, 277 from 2PT, 60 from 3PT, 177 from Free Throws, and the team had 683 rebounds, 43 blocks, and 243 steals. The Girls Basketball team had a great year and we can’t wait to see what they have to bring next season!
FIELD HOCKEY: Bringing it this year was the Field Hockey Team, coached by Kate Norgard, and led by 8 seniors: Daniela Onorato, Lila Pilkington, Suraiya Perrett, Catie Colatrella, Ailany Sanchez, Mia Decker, Kayla Hernandez, and Adisen Aemisegeo. Statistically, Catie Colatrella took the lead with 3 goals and 2 assists, following short behind is Mia Decker with 2 goals and 2 assists. Goalie Vanessa Pennella had 105 goals this season, bringing her to 115 all time saves as a sophomore! This year the team had 8 goals, 7 assists, 27 points, 7 defensive saves, and 121 saves. The team had a strong season this year, and we wish luck to the graduating seniors with their plans after high school!
SWIMMING: Roxbury Swim has continued to be a dominating force in the water world. Led by Senior Captains, Derek Gutowski, Anna Anikiej, Aizik Guevara, and Caitlyn Kramaritsch brought both Boys and Girls Swim to a combined record of 11 – 10. Seniors’ Mathew Milun, Aidan Ochoa, Alex Ochoa, Ariana Abazi, Clara Donnelly, Nicole Cunha, Janelle Pratt, Angelina Rivera, and Leah Stavitsky were celebrated this year, and they played important roles in the team’s success. Making 1st All Conference were Aidan Ochoa, Mathew Milun, Aidan Saladino, and Nathan Milun. Additionally, Maya Anikiej was honored with the 2nd Team All Conference title, as well as Derek Gutowski and Sophie Sanders who both earned the All Conference Honorable Mention. Some records were broken this year, Aidan Ochoa who beat the previous record with his time of 1:08:58 in the Men’s 100 Breaststroke. Additionally, Aidan Saladino, Mathew and Nathan Milun, and Aidan Ochoa broke the record for Men’s 400 Freestyle Relay with their best time of 3:43:38. It was a great year for the swim team and we’re so excited for what’s to come in the 24-25 season.
GOLF: This year, Roxbury Golf has an impressive record of 14-6, with 4 more matches to come. Coached by Mr. David Monaco, and led by seniors; Jake Morgan, Michael Temple, Sean Finnan, Austin Christian, Robert Blakut, Michael D’Arco, and Nick Pieper. The Gaels are currently ranked 3rd in the National Division 2023-2024 NJAC Standings. The golf team has had a great season so far and there is still much more to come in their next 4 matches.
BOWLING: Roxbury Bowling dominated their league all season, earning themselves the title of the Morris County Bowling Champions. With a record of 16-4, the bowling team took it to the next level. Head Coach Kevin Cantwell led the team, along with seniors, Tyler Brooks, Robert Blakut, Jeremiah Albo, Alex Brooks, and Gavin Mattes. The team totaled 53,904 pins, and Jeremiah Albo held the record for a high game of 279, and a high set of 714, Tyler Brooks also led the team with the highest average of 199.32. The team was 9-1 in NJAC – West, and we hope to see them come back and even better again next year.
WRESTLING: Wrestling went 8-13 this season, and was ranked #3 in the NJAC National Division. Senior’s Austin Buczynski, Giovanni Cortes, Will Knapp, Noah Matthews, and Brett Salitsky did not disappoint this year. Knapp with a record of 26-4, and Buczynski with 21-7 led the team statistically to their success.
TENNIS: Roxbury Tennis has brought home 4 wins so far this season, and they’re ready to bring back even more. Roxbury Tennis has 3 seniors, 7 juniors, 7 sophomores, and 6 freshmen. The seniors, Justin Masi, Kaylie Blanchard, and Ashleigh Ribe are playing their hardest to make their last highschool season their best. Boys tennis has 2 more matches left this season, and we wish them luck for the rest of their season.
GYMNASTICS: Roxbury is extremely lucky to have a very talented gymnastics team, coached by Ms. Caitlyn Gluck. Leading the team were seniors Bianca Marchese-Petro, Amanda Hellner, and Janelle Pratt. This season Roxbury Gymnastics had a record of 4-6, with many very close matchups! Good luck to Amanda, Jae, and Bianca with their post graduation plans!
Roxbury Athletics this year were top tier! From an almost undefeated football record, to our Bowling Gaels with a Morris County Championship Title, our Athletic Program has always been one of the best, and this season was no different. This year we watched incredible soccer seasons to nail-biting lacrosse games, no matter the circumstances, the Gaels always delivered. A big thank you goes out to Mr. Mason for being the reason Roxbury Athletics is as successful as it is, and without him we could never do the things we do today. What a great year it was for Roxbury, and as always, it’s a great day to be a Gael.
