On April 8th, 2024, a total solar eclipse took place. This solar eclipse was seen across North America, and is considered by many the “Great North American Eclipse.” The eclipse crossed over Mexico, the United States, as well as Canada. It was viewed by over 42 million people, leaving the Northern Hemisphere in awe of this phenomenon. To many, clouds and severe storms unfortunately complicated attempts to view the eclipse in America. Overall, the eclipse left all in awe of this natural spectacle, and a moment many will treasure for years to come.
What is a solar eclipse? A solar eclipse is when the Moon passes fully in between the Earth and the Sun, which consequently blocks the view of the sun for individuals on planet Earth. Most solar eclipses known have lasted about 3.5 minutes, and the longest recorded has lasted over 4 minutes. In cities where a partial eclipse is occurring, this obscuring of the sun can last for more than 2 hours. According to NASA, people on the path of totality saw an eclipse that lasted between 3 ½ and 4 minutes
The last solar eclipse seen by man occurred in 2021, and was only visible from Antarctica. The eclipse lasted one minute and 54 seconds, according to NOAA. In 2017, The most recent solar eclipse viewed in the U.S. happened on August 21st, 2017. This eclipse began in Lincoln City, Oregon, on the morning of August 21st. It reached the city at 10:16am, and swept across the United States, at a rate of 1,200 miles per hour, as viewers in 14 different states got to view the eclipse. The darkness began its end around Charleston, South Carolina, at 2:48pm, and the last of the shadow made its final exit out of America at 4:09 pm.
When a solar eclipse is occurring, many are eager to view the spectacle. Many have concluded that The Amistad National Recreation Area, which is located in South Texas, will provide one of the best views of the eclipse. The Amistad Area is one of the few National Park locations that was directly in the path of the eclipse. Many viewers made their way to South Texas even days in advance, in order to get the best spot. Those who were there were able to see the full eclipse before the rest of the country.
Safety precautions to take during eclipses’. When viewing a solar eclipse, it is recommended you wear certified eclipse protection glasses, which you can get almost anywhere, or use a handheld solar viewer, which you can purchase online. It is also said to avoid looking near the sun bare eyed for the entirety of the day. Human eye retinas are extremely sensitive, so it is crucial to take precautions when viewing the eclipse.
The Great North American Eclipse was a wonder, and an experience many will never forget! Make sure to remember this moment, because another eclipse isn’t expected to cross North America again until Aug. 23, 2044.
