While it’s no secret that 2024 has been one of the most politically chaotic election years in recent American history, one of the most unexpected things might just be coming true, and it comes from the world of drag.
Popular drag queen and host of the wildly popular MTV show “RuPaul’s Drag Race” posted a 15-second video to his Instagram on February 27th. In the video, RuPaul stands in front of an American flag wearing a blue suit, saying he has an “announcement of an announcement for the American people.” He then goes on to link a website called “rupaul2024.com” which currently only hosts the same video from his Instagram, a potential campaign logo that reads “RuPaul 2024,” and an option to subscribe for an email notification relating to the announcement that RuPaul is teasing.
But let’s dive deeper into this to better understand the likelihood of an actual RuPaul 2024 presidential bid. The FEC, officially the Federal Election Commission, is the agency responsible for everything related to federal elections, including candidacy filings which are shared with the public via their official website. By visiting the FEC website and searching for RuPaul, there is only one result which links back to a $15 campaign contribution that RuPaul gave to Bernie Sanders’ 2020 campaign on February 1, 2020.
Therefore, it is conclusive that RuPaul is not running for president in 2024, right? That’s where we could easily be wrong though, as the FEC occasionally might take a while to upload filings and documents to their online database. There is also the possibility that the FEC has not yet reviewed RuPaul’s filing, as awaiting a review for a candidacy filing can take a couple of days at minimum as most candidates will file their candidacy through a certified mail service like USPS.
While it can still be entirely possible – or not – that RuPaul is *actually* running for president, only time will tell as his announcement is nearing the second. One thing that is interesting to point out is that he had said to Entertainment Weekly in 2017 that he would never run for any sort of political office. Keep in mind though that 2017 was six years ago, and that his stance on the idea may have changed in that six-year gap.
