Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” is back after a multiple-month hiatus due to the Hollywood writer’s strike. A new season of the show is set to premiere on October 16, 2023. Viewers of the show are very excited for the comeback of the late-night comedy show. However, one big question remains. How will the show run without a host?
Before the writer’s strike, which started in May 2023, the former host of the show, Trevor Noah, resigned in September of 2022 after hosting for seven years. In a heartfelt speech, he thanked the fans for sticking with him and acknowledged that his time at the Daily Show was up. “A lot of American business and American media is just like, ‘Keep it going as long as possible,’ but I think it’s healthy for things to end when they’re still in a good place. I want to leave before I’m burnt out because there are many other things I’d like to do.” Noah said to the camera.
This came as a shock to everyone. Noah had not told anyone he planned on leaving the show. This left fans heartbroken and the show without a host. “I really loved Trevor as a host. He was funny, honest, and always had an interesting perspective on things. He always made me laugh” an anonymous viewer of the show states.
For the remainder of the season, before the writers strike, Leslie Jones and other guest hosts stepped in to run the show. Some of the guest hosts included Dulcé Sloan, Jordan Klepper, Roy Wood Jr., Desi Lydic, and more. Each guest host had multiple nights on the show which gave viewers different perspectives as well as a feel for each of the hosts. “Klepper is definitely my favorite. His humor is unmatched. I especially enjoy his interview segments, they’re hilarious! I think he would be a great host” an anonymous contributor says.
The Daily Show is currently keeping an eye out for someone to take the host seat. Many rumors have been circulating about who will fill the seat. Originally, many sources such as Variety Magazine and Vanity Fair claim that Hasan Minhaj is being considered and is currently the front runner. However, once news about Minhaj in The New Yorker caused some controversy around him people began to speculate he most likely would not be taking the host seat.
Some of the controversy surrounding Minhaj included an interview with The New Yorker in which he said that his stand-up material was not factually accurate, which turned some people away. He has also been called “unethical” by former staffers on the Daily Show in interviews with The Wrap who believe his lies about racist incidents happening to him should disqualify him from ever sitting in the host’s chair.
However, the show must go on, even without a permanent host, at least for now According to many sources, the show is set to rotate through guest hosts until the end of 2023. The show is hoping to have someone fill the host seat by 2024 to kick off the new year. However, who that will be is still unknown and being debated amongst viewers.
Although fans will be waiting anxiously to see who the new host will be, it’s exciting to have the show back on air! The show is set to premiere on October 16th, 2023 at 11 PM Eastern Standard Time. Make sure to tune in for a comedic spin on all the latest stories in the news!
