Protesters Take Over US Capitol

Introduction

News headlines are all talking about the riots going on at the Capitol building. People engaged in riots both inside and outside the US Capitol building. The people are mad and want justice, but their reason is short and simple; they are protesting the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Where It All Started

On January 6th, 2021, thousands of people stormed the U.S. Capitol building and wreaked havoc all over. People were taking federal property, storming into a federal building illegally, destroying federal property, running around with American and Confederate flags, among other infractions.

Who Was Arrested?

Most of those arrested at the Capitol will be brought up on federal charges. Some of the most notable include Klete Keller, Robert Keith Packer, Doug Jensen, Jacob Anthony Chansley, Richard “Bigo” Barnett, and Adam Johnson.

Klete Keller was charged with “obstructing law enforcement engaged in official duties incident to civil disorder; knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds,” (USAToday).

Robert Keith Packer was charged with “knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority and violent entry or disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds,” (USAToday).

Doug Jensen was charged with “knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; disrupting the orderly conduct of government business; violent entry and disorderly conduct in a Capitol building; parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building; Obstructing a law enforcement officer during a civil disorder,” (USAToday).

Jacob Anthony Chansley was charged with “knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, and with violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds,” (USAToday).

Richard “Bigo” Barnett was charged with “knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful entry; violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds; and theft of public money, property, or records,” (USAToday).

Lastly, Adam Johnson was charged with “knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; one count of theft of government property; and one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds,” (USAToday).

As of now, we only know that three of these people were released. Those include Klete Keller, Robert Keith Packer, and Doug Jensen. They were either released on bail or had a trial. All those arrested are still waiting for trial.

Who Was Killed?

Sadly, there were some deaths at the Capitol. There were five deaths in total and those include Officer Brian Sicknick, Ashli Babbitt, Kevin Greeson, Benjamin Philips, and Rosanne Boyland. Officer Sicknick was injured while dealing with protestors and law enforcement officials say he was hit in the head with a fire extinguisher, which ultimately resulted in his death. Ashil Babbitt was an Air Force Veteran who was fatally shot by an officer when she tried climbing into a broken window in the building. Kevin Greeson had a heart attack during the rioting and, according to his wife, he suffered from high blood pressure. It is alleged that the intensity of the rioting at the Capitol is what caused the heart attack. Benjamin Philips died of a stroke according to a report in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Finally, Rosanne Boyland died after she collapsed at the event. First responders performed CPR on her, but they were too late.

Conclusion

The events that occurred at the Capitol on January 6th are unlike any in U.S. history. Certainly, this event is memorable and going to be one for the history books.
